New Public Works Facilities Project Johnson County's two newest green buildings for the Public Works Department's complex in west Olathe are moving from the drawing board to the start of construction after more than two years in planning. The project will utilize many recycled and regional materials, and will also focus on construction waste management. It will use the earth in its heating/cooling system and the sun for light. And, the Public Works facility is designed for future certification for green construction by the U.S. Green Building Council through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, program. Olathe Adult Detention Center Expansion and Modification
|
An expansion to the existing Olathe Adult Detention Center will consolidate the booking process for multiple municipalities and accommodate the increasing number of individuals being arrested and incarcerated in Johnson County. Prior to design and construction commencing, bookings were executed in two locations, at the Olathe facility and the New Century facility. Neither facility could accommodate 100% of the current booking load, sending local law enforcement agencies to two facilities and creating a situation that kept the arresting/transporting officer out of their jurisdiction for longer periods of time. By creating a centralized booking in Olathe, the eighteen municipalities, county, and state law enforcement agencies that house inmates at the Detention Centers will be able to lodge inmates in a location that is centralized and will expedite the return to their jurisdiction. The new facility will expand and modify intake and booking, administrative, and support spaces. The project also includes replacement of building systems and the exterior envelope for increased performance and improved energy efficiency. |

Youth and Family Services Center
Construction of the Youth and Family Services Center (YFSC) is well under way, with completion anticipated by the 1 st quarter 2011. The $17.5 million project is located across from the existing Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) at 915 Spruce Street in Olathe. The project includes minor renovations to the JDC. The building will utilize a combination of exterior materials including limestone, burnished concrete block, sustainable hard woods and glass to create a welcoming appearance and blend in with the surrounding residential neighborhood while creating a civic presence. The YFSC will be the first Johnson County government building to incorporate 1% for Art. The YFSC will include approximately 44,000 square feet, constructed on one level. The primary focus of the YFSC is to convey a welcoming, inviting and non-threatening image to encourage troubled youth and families to use the services offered by the Family Resource Center (FRC) that will be located in this facility. Other functions in the facility include: Child In Need of Care (CINC), House Arrest, Administrative Services, Central Support Services (Building engineering services), Staff Training Center, 33 Minimum Security Detention Beds and Central Programs areas including Crossroads Counseling, Visitation, Recreation, and Education spaces. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 13th at the site. The YFSC facility and JDC renovations were designed by Treanor Architects P.A., and construction is managed by JE Dunn Construction. LEED certification is anticipated. |
